The tutoring position at the New York Foundling is aimed to help students in the foster care system by providing academic mentorship and support. Not only is this position aimed to help students with school, but also to advocate on behalf of students for resources and programs that aren't offered to them.
Host individual tutoring sessions weekly with each student on caseload of 18 youth, including taveling to and from sessions as well as submitting timely and detailed documentation, to ensure youth are met at least twice per month and academic goals/milestones are met.
Communicate regularly and consistently to students, caregivers, stakeholders and other staff to ensure sessions are being consistently attended, all stakeholders are in agreement with service plan, and providing comprehensive services to the youth.
Preparing for tutoring sessions including creating individualized session plans that are culturally competent and academically rigorous, as well as reviewing content, IEPs and additional supports to ensure the student is supported from a holistic standpoint.
Attend professional development including individual coaching, group coaching, and departmental meetings, case review with team members and supervisors as well as attend additional trainings from HR, ACS and partner organizations to ensure skill and tutoring techniques are developed to the best ability.
Advocate and support tracking academic progress, including advising on high school applications, college applications and sustaining academic progress to ensure youth reaches their highest academic potential.
Bachelor's Degree
1-2 years experience working directly with students in a school or extracurricular or community based setting.
Ability to tutor multiple courses including core academic subjects and remedial skill building.
