The New York Foundling’s Mentored Internship Program provides opportunities for young people in foster care to gain real-world work experience and career skills through supported internships. Interns recruited from our foster care programs work as Project Assistants in various departments of The Foundling, integrated with other staff members. Career readiness training and mentoring can
make a powerful difference for young people raised in foster care, who have unequal access to the financial, practical, and social supports that many young adults can expect from their parents as they explore the work world. Each intern is individually matched with a Mentor/Supervisor who trains them in skills needed for their tasks, as well as more broadly transferrable work skills and behaviors. Mentor/Supervisors also provide weekly formal supervision sessions.
Responsibilities can include; assisting with basic administrative & office related task (filing,
phone calls, mail handling, moving or procuring office supplies, organizing rooms, interacting with the
community in which we serve, research, report writing, training, video project and newsletter assembly, and other
creative projects as assigned). Some field work is possible and traveling to different office locations may be
necessary. Participation throughout the program requires you to be available for virtual and in person meetings,
consistent and appropriate contact with your mentor and internship coordinator, as well as meeting assignment
deadlines on a weekly basis.
The New York Foundling is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse employee population, the Foundling will honor your experiences, perspectives and unique identity. Together, our community strives to create and maintain working and learning environments that are inclusive, equitable and welcoming.
